Happy Holidays!

December 8 and December 9, 2018

Happy Holidays!

  • Pachelbel—Canon in D

  • Bach—Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring

  • Corelli—Christmas Concerto

  • Russell Steinberg—Light’s On!

  • A Hanukkah Medley

  • Bach/Gounod—Ave Maria

  • Harris—A Medley of Christmas Carols

Not one, but two carol sing-alongs conclude our concerts—a great holiday tradition. One is with orchestra and the other gathered ‘round the piano led by our maestro. And Baroque music ts the holidays like Stilton and Port. Let’s trim the tree and spin the dreidel together.

*Performance will be held at Stockton University's Campus Center Theater.

Mozart, Finzi and Verdi featuring pianist Juho Pohjonen performing Mozart's Concerto No.23

January 19 and January 20, 2019

Mozart, Finzi and Verdi featuring pianist Juho Pohjonen performing Mozart's Concerto No.23

  • Mozart—Adagio and Fugue

  • Mozart—Concerto, Piano, No.23, K.488, Juho Pohjonen, piano

  • Finzi—Romance

  • Verdi—Symphony for Strings

Mozart + Verdi = opera, and surely this concert is brimming with drama and lyricism—wait till you hear the Finzi!—yet without a single word sung. Juho Pohjonen brings a rare intensity and conviction to this spectacularly layered concerto.

Brahms and Berlioz featuring Cecelia Hall, mezzo-soprano

March 16 and March 17, 2019

Brahms and Berlioz featuring Cecelia Hall, mezzo-soprano

  • Berlioz— Les Nuits d’été (Summer Nights) Cecelia Hall, mezzo-soprano

  • Brahms—Symphony No. 4

Light and dark—chiaroscuro—transfigure this concert of ultimate contrast. In Berlioz’s perfumed song cycle, each poem comes to languorous life, soaring or melting by turns, especially with Cecelia Hall’s richly-hued voice and magnetic artistry. Brahms’ final symphony miraculously deepens with each tone and yet simultaneously somehow shimmers with almost piercing luminosity. The conclusion is one of the most shattering in all of music.

Season Finale!

  • Amanda Harberg—World Premiere

  • Barber—Violin Concerto, Alexi Kenney, violin

Our finale revels in crisp powerful gesture, romping fun, and vivacious muscularity—oh, and also American lyricism without apology. Alexi Kenney is a poet of the violin and phenomenal virtuoso!

This concert features the vast array of colors of the woodwinds and brass.  Gounod’s charming Petite Symphonie is more a suite, filled with warm sounds and echos of southern France, while Mozart’s so-called serenade is a virtual symphony in its human pathos.  Dvořák gives us ripples of nature and rural life in its folk-dance forms in this program filled with melody, shimmer, and emotion.

  • Charles Gounod––Petite Symphonie
  • Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart––Serenade No. 12 for Winds, in C minor, K. 388
  • Antonín  Dvořák ––Serenade for Winds, op. 44
